Why Raspberry Red?
A young man of 10 watched his sister pluck Red Trix from the cereal box. When he asked her why, she indicated that red was the only flavor she liked. The inquisitive lad blindfolded her and tested her ability to discriminate. As you'd expect, she was right only a third of the time. Why? Because all Trix colors have exactly the same fruit flavor.
Trix had a marketing dilemma. By using the color as a noun (not an adjective): Raspberry Red, Lemon Yellow, Orange Orange, they were able to create a marketing campaign and work around strict FTC and FDA issues.
Moral: good marketing lasts a long time, there is always a solution if you're willing to look for it.
Things We Believe
(In no particular order)
- 1 The most important skill in business? The ability to make intelligent decisions with imperfect information.
- 2 The Law of Large Numbers works. Large groups of people tend to repeatedly behave in very predictable ways.
- 3 We all want quality work, delivered on time, at the price we expect. Pick any two.
- 4 Horse racing exists because people come to different conclusions even though all look at the same set of facts.
- 5 If you believe tomorrow's weather will be the same as today's, you'll be correct 90% of the time. And get wet the other 10%.
- 6 We all like to believe we can change. Nearly always, we can't.
- 7 One of the biggest sins in business is being boring. Seth Godin was right: we need purple cows.
- 8 A great exercise for growth: Every 90 days, do something that makes you uncomfortable.
- 9 LEGO was much better as free-form blocks... before it came in model kits.
- 10 If you want to borrow money from friends, decide which one you need more.
- 11 Certain things can't be rushed -- nine pregnant women can't have a baby in a month.
- 12 Google & the web have moved our society from Push Marketing to Pull.
- 13 The Law of Six.
- 14 Make lots of small mistakes. But, no large ones.
- 15 Over-promise. Then, over-deliver.
- 16 It won't happen unless you believe it will.
- 17 Sometimes, the best solution is the least bad one.
- 18 "FREE!" used to stimulate behavior. It now inhibits it.
- 19 If you can't measure it, you can't manage it.
- 20 The worm always turns.
